Sign Font Collision Will Make You Cry And Die Inside

The Park City Pub is a little Portland neighborhood pub just about two blocks west of the intrsection of NE 82nd Avenue and Sandy Blvd. The sign looks like it was put together by a committee ... that never came to an agreement about it.

My eyes are suing for a trial separation for making them look at this.

At least they got the mountain (Mt Hood) more-or-less correct.

Fairley's Pharmacy-PDX Street Type

Fairley's Pharmacy is a small pharmacy in NE Portland, in the Roseway nabe, at NE 72nd/Fremont St/Sandy Blvd.

It's a tiny drugstore that still has a real soda fountain in an adorable flatiron building, and the rehabbed signs
that wrap 'round the building preseve the old-fashioned look and feel - down to the type.

And Drink Coca-Cola signage FTW!

New Stark Street Blade in Portland Oregon Features the new Clearview hwy font

I also found a new blade pair at SE 37th Avenue and Stark Street in Portland. This time, what's different is really different, and really exciting:

It's not just the mixed-case of the signs (Portland has been historically all-majuscules) but the new Clearview highway font. Read more about Clearview here:

New Style of Street Signs in Portland

Due to what has to be some Federal mandate, a new format of street blade has been seen in Portland ... the first change of sign in what has to be about, I'd estimate, 50 or 60 years.

Here's some photos from NE 74th Avenue and Sandy Blvd:

The new signs have more 'white space' (it's actually green), a thick border defining the outside shape, rounded corners (they're web 2.0!) and the crossing block face is now an integral part of the sign.

US Capitols Photo Map, Take 2

This time I darkened the background and added a list of states and their capital cities. I think the lighter shapes of the states stand out better against the darker blue. The dark background, of course, demands white type.

I used PD or CC licensed photos from Wikipedia but since I'm doing this as a "for me" project I've not documented yet the actual creators, but if you go to the Wikipedia page for each state capitol you'll probably be able to find out pretty quick who did 'em. If I polish this up any more, I will.

If I take this any farther, I'll have to cut down the sizes on some pictures. Some of them are pretty high-rez, and when you mask them out with 50 shapes, the file get's gnarlingly large and takes a while to save on a PowerMac G4, even if it has 2 cores. The budget for upgrading is still zero, so we'll have to use what we have for a while.

A US Map of Capitol Building Photos, By Me!

Under development. Need to break out the small states so you can really see the pictures on the tiny ones.

What Microsoft Bing Should Really Look Like

If you're going to debut a service called Bing, there should be some Bing there.

Or, as we like to say ... go Bing, or go home.

(The image from Road to Bali, as far as I've been able to determine, is PD (). Ribbing MSFT is a cultural imperative)

Oregon Lottery Grammar FAIL

The grammar on this notice from an actual Oregon Lottery Keno video monitor at a local all-nite dive is just so wonderfully awkward that, just when you think you've understood it, just like those "Magic Eye" 3D vision tricks, it slips from your grasp.

How can you have won less than the ticket you've paid for?
